After a spring spent coping with her mother’s death—and shooting yet another award-winning film segment in Alaska—Fasani and Benchetler decided it was time to start a family. “I knew when I had a baby that I was going to have to pave my own path, because not a lot of women in pro snowboarding have tried to do this,” Fasani says. “But I was 100 percent in.”
She called Burton CEO Donna Carpenter in September 2017, when she was about 12 weeks pregnant. “I had already decided that just because I was pregnant, I didn’t need to retire from snowboarding,” Fasani says. “But still, I didn’t know how my sponsors were going to react.”
Turns out there was no need to worry. “As soon as I called Donna, she said, ‘Let’s do this,’” Fasani recalls. “To have one of the biggest leaders of our sport—a female CEO of a company I’m very passionate about—say that immediately ... it made me let go of my guard and realize that me having a baby is not only going to be accepted by the industry, it’s going to be celebrated.”
Koa was born on a stormy day in March 2018, and six weeks later Fasani was back on her snowboard. “We immediately got back into adventuring,” she says. That summer, when Koa was five months old, the family traveled to New Zealand for a month and lived in an RV while they snowboarded and surfed. “I feel like other women need to see that even though it’s not easy, it’s possible.”

For those of you not familiar with Breitling, the new collaboration is a modern and eco-friendly spin on one of its iconic stainless-steel dive watches that’s waterproof to 1,000 meters. “The original Superocean first launched in 1957 and is one of the most sought-after and beautiful vintage dive watches in the world,” says Breitling’s chief marketing officer, Tim Sayler. The design has evolved over the years, Sayler notes, and in many ways it’s better than ever—“a super-classic all-purpose watersports watch that looks great.” And what makes the Superocean Outerknown most unique is the upcycled strap, which is made with ECONYL® yarn, a high-performance material that Outerknown uses in boardshorts and jackets and is made from discarded fishing nets and other repurposed nylons. The Superocean Outerknown comes with a dark matte green strap, which happens to be Slater’s favorite color, but the straps are available in six colors, and can be paired with any Breitling watch.
In many ways, the collaboration is a natural fit for Breitling and Outerknown, two brands with a shared passion for reducing their ecological footprints and combating ocean pollution. More than 90 percent of the products Outerknown manufactures are made from organic, recycled, or regenerated materials, and the company kicked off its ongoing partnership with Ocean Conservancy in 2017 with a capsule collection and the “It’s Not OK!” campaign, a giveback program designed to bring awareness to environmental issues. Breitling also supports Ocean Conservancy, kicking off the partnership last year with a special-edition Superocean Heritage Ocean Conservancy watch, a portion of the proceeds of which were donated to the organization. Additionally, Breitling helps organize beach cleanups around the globe. For Slater, a longtime environmental activist and sustainable lifestyle advocate, it’s not just about the future of surfing but about the future of the planet. “The ocean and the beach are essentially my office,” he notes. “I’ll do everything in my power to keep them clean.”

You hear the wave before you see it. First, the hydrofoil, essentially a partially submerged snowplow attached to a train-like machine that pushes up a wall of water as it moves down the track, fires up with a low, industrial-sounding thrum. And then the wave comes, and it’s fast and big and perfect—and for a moment you may forget that you’re standing at the edge of a massive concrete-bottomed pool surrounded by farmland, in Lemoore, California, in the heart of the state’s Central Valley, roughly three hours northwest of Los Angeles.
Then, if you’re lucky, like we were earlier this fall, you’ll see Kelly Slater—who in addition to being the best surfer of all time is also the visionary behind this place—pop up on the wave and start absolutely shredding it. Watching Slater surf in person on any wave is impressive, but here, on his wave, it’s a picture of grace and beauty. A lot has been written about Slater’s Surf Ranch, and for good reason: it offers a surreal glimpse of what the future of surfing could look like.
The day was organized by Outerknown and Breitling. In addition to Kelly Slater, the two other members of Breitling’s all-star surf squad—Australian professional surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons—were also on hand to show us how it’s done. The goal was twofold: to see if we mere mortals could catch a ride (the wave pool has three settings, one of which, the “Waikiki” setting, is slower, smaller, and very beginner friendly, like the iconic Hawaiian longboard wave for which it was named) and also to unveil Breitling’s new Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown watch, the latest collaboration between Breitling and Outerknown, the sustainable lifestyle brand Slater founded in 2015.

A Star Is Born
The Future Is Bright
With Koa happily napping in the backpack, Fasani and Benchetler spend the morning touring low-angle terrain not far from their house. There are no rad lines or huge airs today. Instead, once Koa wakes up, they take frequent snack breaks and show him cool trees and tracks in the snow. Sure, Fasani still gets after it—filming segments for next season’s snowboarding blockbusters, developing innovative new products with Burton, inspiring the next generation of rippers—but all of that now fits into a bigger picture. One that centers around raising her son.
“This has been the biggest year of learning and adapting and slowing down in my life,” Fasani says. “For that, I’m thankful—because I’ve never experienced anything like it.”
